MARA SIRIA LUXURY TENTED CAMP - THE REAL THING IN SAFARI EXPERIENCE.
(1672 words)
What is a holiday in the bush about? Surely it involves getting acquainted with the surrounding country, its plant and wildlife. Accordingly one’s needs are going to be simple, with surroundings that are relaxed and perceptibly comfortable. Mara Siria tented camp maintains a clever balance between ‘the real camping experience’ and uncomplicated but very adequate comfort. It is reminiscent of the old hunting safari scene in which everything was there for the asking and individual tastes and special requests catered for. Away with air-conditioned tents, beauty parlours and health centres. That seems the penultimate in grotesque sophistication and a contradiction in terms: keep these first world-style indulgences for the hotels in Nairobi or at the Coast, but why drag them to the middle of the bush as some organisations have done? A holiday in Africa means at best an escape from all these extravagances.
Mara Siria camp is not ‘nestled’ as every other camp or lodge seems to be these days: it is very definitely ‘perched’ right on the edge of the Mara’s Siria escarpment, within the Mara Triangle. The view is magnificent while the setting is secluded with each tent, of which there are eight out of sight of the others. In a nutshell the choice of location is brilliant, looking eastwards towards the spectacular sunrise that every day brings. However, a breath-taking view alone doesn’t make a safari-style holiday, and with this in mind, at Siria camp each guest’s needs are taken care of with careful consideration. It can accommodate 16 adults, and there are two family tents, slightly bigger than the rest, which will allow room for beds for one child each, if so required.
The tents themselves are spacious, and cool, all with their own bathroom, hot shower, flush-type loo and very comfortable beds. A wide covered veranda facing the panoramic Mara landscape, allows guests to relax in comfortable camp chairs, read or just enjoy the birdsong and the sound of the Mara river far below at the bottom of the escarpment. Solar panels (each tent has one) provide electricity for lighting, and there is plenty of water, although currently it is camp policy to use it carefully.
Mara Siria is hours’ drive from Nairobi, and one hour’s flying distance. There are two scheduled flights daily from Wilson Airport Nairobi. The camp has an ample number of vehicles that are available at all times for visitors’ requirements. Staff are quietly efficient, caring and genuinely concerned to see that visitors enjoy their stay.
